If you're thought of staying home this weekend, hopefully these shots will convert you otherwise. Saturday night at Yuyintang featured rock acts that varied in manner and sound, with hardcore punk, garage punk and outright screaming all making an appearance during the evening.
Aberration schlepped it over from Wuhan to do their Guns N' Roses tribute thing, and their edition of Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever was the highlighting of our evening. We never really appreciated the musical stylings of The Nuge, but Aberration convinced us that a reevaluation might be in order.
Local act The Instigation was the evening's most viscerally frightening fare, and we think that as a compliment. Frontman Simon did a one-man roaming seance on the story throughout their entire set, alternately spitting out bottled water and collapsing up and down. The showgoers allowed him a wide berth.
And Dragon Pizza, who are braving the nuclear fallout to run shows in Japan and Korea, had the evening's most dedicated following, with one fan standing as tight as possible to the band for the full set. Bassist Yu-ki played and sang while simultaneously standing on one leg and shaking the other, which is something we're rather sure we've never seen done anywhere else.
Exita served as the first openers, and seemed to be carrying the flashlight for Macbook punk, making the type that laptops and guitars can coexist in peace.
And as for this weekend's fare, Friday night features The Dancers, a punk/hard rock Beijing band composed of members from former D-22 regulars Joyside (RMB40).
Saturday is for the electro/dub-step contingent, featuring Guzz, Ssoso, Linfeng and Knife, from 11pm to 4am (FREE!).
Note: Due to scheduling difficulties, we were unable to halt for headlining act The Fever Machine's set. However, we'd like to have a cry out to fellow journalist Dan Shapiro and The Fever Machine for featuring different bands at Yuyintang as percentage of their regular Fever Machine & Friends gig. Rock on, comrades!
