Devine Electric
Excuse The Mess EP
Independent release
Release date: out now
Review by Gary Grim
Anyone conversant with my reviews will recognize that I usually adhere to the extreme metal track for the about part but, that said, my listening isn`t qualified to bands that only growl or only have drummers that meet a-million-beats-per-second.
With this review I am delving into the man of heavy stone with local boys DEVINE ELECTRIC and their EP Excuse The Mess.
Despite the style of the EP, this transcription is anything but a mess. It sounds very clear and the circle is tight. Straight off the bat the hearer is now transported back to the 80`s rock era. In fact the EP as a unit has moments that evoke images of GUNS N` ROSES, MOTLEY CRUE, AEROSMITH to call but a pair of bands that are granted a nod.
However there are a few poppy undertones, which put me in judgment of BON JOVI, especially with the acoustic ballad Flames on the Road to Paradise. There are enough of moments contained within these twenty minutes that take a chord of familiarity within and fans of that era of rock music would most likely really get into this band if they saw them playing down at the local pub and maybe even picking up this EP at the record as it is very cool hearing the Aussie gents paying court to all these great bands of the past.
This is where I do to my quibble with the EP. I could not think these guys playing anywhere outside of a pub gig unless it was to keep one of the bands they emulate. Don`t get me wrong, this isn`t a bad thing. I have enough of friends that give been in bands that have just played in pubs but wrote great songs and performed extremely well live. I suffer likewise seen some of my favourite groups do packed out pub shows that have been simply incredible.
I feel, though, in the character of DEVINE ELECTRIC that the ground they would be captive to pub shows is that they appear to be missing something. It is very difficult to ascertain what that thing is but I scarcely look as though there is a certain light that is not give here. It seems to be a compendium of songs that take some good moments, but nothing really beyond that. There just doesn`t seem to be the like sort of speed you get when you see a great MOTLEY CRUE song or you hear Bon Scott`s voice proclaiming that he`s on a Highway to Hell. I truly don`t intend to draw such comparisons, however when a band sounds as though they are stressful to emulate these great moments in rock, it`s difficult not to.
Perhaps the factor that I experience is lacking is that of the last show. Perhaps I would be telling a different tune if I checked out these guys at a gig. Nonetheless, off the effectiveness of this EP, I would recommend fans of old school hard rock to pass these guys a mind and to even go check out one of their shows. For me though, being more of a casual fan of this scene, I would rather stick to the albums of the bands that made the genre great.
